89 Escort GT-harness fire

Question:
I know this is a Mustang group (I own a 67 Convertible and Shelby GT-500) but I almost lost my 89 Escort GT yesterday. Harness to alternator started smoking real bad, shut it down quick, no fire thank goodness. Anyone else ever heard of similar problem/cause?
