Dumb Question: What are the side air ents for?
Question:
My friend asked me the other day what the purpose of the side air vents leeding to the the rear wheels are for on my 95 stang. Strangly, I never though about it. So what is the real pupose for them?
Response:
hey, Those side vents leading down to your rear wheels are for your brakes. They are there to help keep the brakes nice and cool. Response:
on the 95 They are in fact REAL vents. They started blocking them in 96. — Steve 95 GTS 95 SHO – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Umm, hello people, they aren’t even vents. It’s just something that looks neat. Take a look at the vent more closely sometime, and even in the wheelwell behind the "vent".

What about your hood vents? Are they blocked too? On my 1997 Cobra (production # 129) , the hood vents are not blocked. I heard they only started blocking them in the later productions. Also, has anyone seen a ram air kit for the Cobra hood vents, so I can put these vents to some good use? If not, why hasn’t one been produced yet? I’ve read that the "side air-scoop" is one of a number of "retro-styling" features that the SN-95 designers incorporated into the current model as a result of consultations with Mustang enthusiasts. (The pony on the grill and three-section taillights are a few more). As a functional feature, it was supposed to channel air to cool the rear brakes. I am unable to comment on how well they served that function… I will however swear that those multiple little ports are a pain in the A** to keep clean. Note that on 1996 (and later?) models, these scoops are non-patent. (e.g. closed, dead-ends, non-perforated). G.Baylon, MD 95 GT

The side vents are for cooling the tires (just kidding, but thats what they are aimed at). To modify them for brake cooling would require routing them through the interior of the car to get arount to the backside of the wheel ass’y (there’s not enough room to do it in the wheelwell). The Cobra hood vents are over the plenum. Any air brought in would have to make 2 major turns to get routed to the MAF/intake. CB 97 Cobra Mustang Coupe

The 1962 Mustang Prototype was a mid engine car! The side scoupes were functional air intakes for the engine. They were also enormous! I guess they liked the looks of them and kept them when the production version came out in 64 1/2. - Marc Reiter ] http://w3.one.net/~marc/
