Help diagnose idle problem on 88 GT
Question:
My 88 GT idles up and down between 700 & 1000 rpm. I ran the diagnostic tests and keep getting code 34. I don’t have a manual for an 88 but my 89-92 manual says it would be something to do with the EGR system. Are the codes the same for the 87 and 88 models. I cleaned the EGR valve and the idle air bypass valve, but it didn’t help any. Any other ideas?
Response:
check the TPS thats what made my 88 all fucked up!

This seems to be problem for many mustang owners; I don’t understand why Ford hasn’t been able to pin point the problem and help us out. I have the 1984 20th Anniversary 4cyl Turbo GT. I have had this problem since day one; I’m the original owner. I took the car back several times under warranty and had various parts replaced, none of which took care of the problem. I found that turning the engine off and restarting would reset the idle. I use fuel injection cleaner in the fuel and on occasion remove the throttle body and clean out the black junk that collects. It seems to help for a while. I don’t know what those codes are, I haven’t run any diagnostics on mine. After 13 years, I have learned to live with it!
